  Blurb

We join Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermoine Weasley 19 years after we left them. They all have children headed to Hogwarts. But things are amiss, wizards are disappearing and turning up dead. All must overcome old rivalries and create new friendships if they are to figure out who is behind this and stop them.

The antidote to the awful, "The Cursed Child" play.

  Act 1 Scene 1

We open on a black stage.

  CECILIA SINCLAIRE: Crucio!

  TRELAWNEY screams.

  CECILIA SINCLAIRE: Who is he?

SYBILL TRELAWNEY: I shall never, I will never... I don’t know.

  CECILIA SINCLAIRE: Liar. CRUCIO!

SYBILL TRELAWNEY: With a vengeful heart, She with the power to conquer will rise.

CECILIA SINCLAIRE: I’ve heard the prophecy, I need-

SYBILL TRELAWNEY: In the fifteenth year of a child, born as the sun reaches its peak, the serpent heir of he who defied our greatest evil will hold the key.

CECILIA fires a curse, TRELAWNEY screams

SYBILL TRELAWNEY: Without him, she falls. With him, she has won. Pure death and destruction will reign.

CECILIA fires yet another curse, and TRELAWNEY screams, collapsing into a heap.

  Blackout

  Act 1 Scene 2

Kings Cross Station. We see ALBUS POTTER, JAMES, and HARRY.

ALBUS POTTER: Platform 9 3/4... It feels different, being here for me.

HARRY POTTER: It’s a big year, your first year. My first year, I made the Quidditch team, and fought off the most evil wizard the world has ever seen. If I can do that, you can do anything.

JAMES POTTER: Of course, there’s always the chance you won’t be able to get onto the train, and then everyone will know you’re a soggy squib.

GINNY and LILY have entered with RON, HERMIONE, and ROSE.

GINNY POTTER: Unnecessary, James. Oh, Albus, there’s nothing to worry about.

LILY POTTER: You’ll be brilliant. (She hugs him) I’m going to miss you.

HERMIONE WEASLEY: Here we are, Rose. Your first trip to Hogwarts. Oh, I’m so pleased!

ROSE WEASLEY: Mum, stop... everyone is staring.

RON WEASLEY: It’s because of me. I’m very famous.

HERMIONE WEASLEY: Let’s go over what we’ve packed. Do you have your robes? Your parchment? Your quills? Your textbooks?

  ROSE WEASLEY: Yes.

HERMIONE WEASLEY: Including Hogwarts, A History?.

  ROSE WEASLEY: Of course.

RON WEASLEY: She packed that one for you.

HERMIONE WEASLEY: Cauldron? Crystal Vials? Brass Scales?

  ROSE WEASLEY: Yes.

  HERMIONE WEASLEY: Your wand?

ROSE WEASLEY: Uh, no. (Beat) Only joking, mum.

  DRACO and SCORFPIUS enter.

RON WEASLEY: Look what the house elf dragged in. Malfoy.

  HERMIONE WEASLEY: Manners, Ron.

ROSE WEASLEY: "Malfoy"... That’s the git you’ve told me about?

  HERMIONE WEASLEY: Rose, language!

  RON WEASLEY: Yeah Rose, language.

SCORPIUS MALFOY: Thank you for walking me to the platform.

DRACO MALFOY: You will have have nearly eight hours on the train, do not waste them. I trust you’ll make acquaintances of the proper sort.

  SCORPIUS MALFOY: Of course, father.

DRACO MALFOY: Once the sorting ceremony is over, avoiding those of... less preferred caliber will become far easier.

We now hear three conversations, though they are speaking only within their own families, they seem to answer each other.

ALBUS POTTER: But... what if I’m in Slytherin?

DRACO MALFOY: It is a house of greatness. Of ambition.

RON WEASLEY: To be honest, I might have to cut you out of the family if you’re sorted there.

  HERMIONE WEASLEY: Ronald.

HARRY POTTER: It doesn’t matter. One of the most cowardly men I have ever met was a Gryffindor, Albus.

JAMES POTTER: Was it Uncle Ron?

  RON WEASLEY: Absolutely not.

  GINNY POTTER: Peter Pettigrew.

SCORPIUS MALFOY: But father, what if no one-

HARRY POTTER: Don’t worry. With the right friends, you can face anything. Ron, Hermione and me were unstoppable.

ROSE WEASLEY: You mean, "and I".

DRACO MALFOY: It’s not polite to correct your father.

  SCORPIUS MALFOY: I’m sorry.

GINNY POTTER: Just remember, no matter what happens,

HERMIONE WEASLEY: No matter who you meet,

DRACO MALFOY: No matter what you’re taught, do not disappoint me.

  RON WEASLEY: We love you.

HARRY POTTER: You’re going to make me proud.

  The Hogwarts Express whistle blows.

  JAMES POTTER: Come on!

  LILY POTTER: Good luck, Al.

HARRY POTTER: Just remember, if anyone gives you any trouble, you’re Harry Potter’s son.

  ALBUS POTTER: Right.

With a final look, JAMES and ALBUS disappear onto the train.

  Blackout

  Act 1 Scene 3

JAMES, FRANK, and ALBUS meander down the Hogwarts Express, trunks in tow.

  ALBUS POTTER: Hey, slow down!

ROSE peeks her head out of a car, waving to her cousins. ALBUS moves to enter the car, JAMES pauses at the door.

JAMES POTTER: Ready for Hogwarts, Rosie?

ROSE WEASLEY: If you’re not careful I’ll be taking your spot on the Quidditch team.

JAMES POTTER: Ha. We’ll see about that!

FRANK LONGBOTTOM: You feeling alright, Al?

  ALBUS shrugs

JAMES POTTER: Right, well, if everyone’s settled, we’ll be on our way.

ALBUS POTTER: What, you’re not staying with us?

JAMES POTTER: Not bloody likely. Cheers!

He grabs his trunk and exits with FRANK, laughing.

ROSE WEASLEY: You excited to be lion, officially?

ALBUS POTTER: You don’t even know if you or I are going to be Gryffindors.

ROSE WEASLEY: Oh, rubbish. I’m a WEASLEY. You’re a Potter. It’s probably guaranteed.

  ALBUS POTTER: Maybe.

ROSE WEASLEY: Don’t be sour. And besides, you can always ask the Sorting Hat to put you where you want. Worked for your dad.

ALBUS smiles. SCORPIUS MALFOY appears at the doorway of the car, panicked.

SCORPIUS MALFOY: Really, truly, sorry to intrude but... is that seat open?

  ROSE WEASLEY: No.

ALBUS POTTER: It’s open... Why are you sweating?

SCORPIUS MALFOY: The trolley witch, I
was standing in the hall, I was fine, but she, well, she frightens me - you know I think she’s got claws, and she said I had to find a car so, she really insisted, and

He cuts himself off. Slowly, and loudly, SCORPIUS unwraps a chocolate frog, taking a large bite. He extends the uneaten half of the frog towards the other two.

SCORPIUS MALFOY: (Mumbled, mouth full) Chocolate frog? (SCORPIUS pulls the card from the package.) It’s Harry Potter. Wanna see? (freezes) Oh, I guess you see everyday, huh? Erm, I'm Scorpius Malfoy.

ALBUS POTTER: I’m Albus. This is my cousin, Rose.

ROSE WEASLEY: I think this car is a bit crowded, don’t you?

  ALBUS POTTER: Rosie!

ROSE WEASLEY: His father is Draco Malfoy. He was a Death Eater, Albus!

SCORPIUS MALFOY: (Frantic, vomiting his words) While technically factual, that wasn’t his choice, and I’m- (Desperate) I’m not my father. (He breaks, desperate, nearly apologetic) Right then, I should probably be going.

  ALBUS POTTER: What for?

  (ROSE smacks ALBUS)

SCORPIUS MALFOY: I, well, she, and you, and I.

  ALBUS POTTER, "Just sit".

  SCORPIUS MALFOY, "Thank you".

ALBUS POTTER: It’s not you, it’s your chocolate frogs I’m after. Let’s see, then- (ROSE smacks him again) Oi, Rose, will you please stop hitting me?!

  ROSE WEASLEY: I’m not.

ALBUS POTTER: Yes you are. Look, you can leave if you want to, but I’m staying here.

SCORPIUS perks up. ROSE is indignant. ALBUS awkwardly attempt to break the tension.

SCORPIUS MALFOY: I wonder what classes are going to be like - though I’m more excited about the Great Hall. Did you know the ceiling is enchanted?!

ALBUS POTTER: Mum says we’re learning about trolls this year.

  SCORPIUS MALFOY: Trolls!

ROSE WEASLEY: Did you know our parents defeated a troll when they were our age?!

A tense moment passes. SCORPIUS smiles.

  SCORPIUS MALFOY: Wicked.

  Blackout

  Act 1 Scene 4

We enter a fluid world of time progression. Lights up on the Great Hall in the Sorting Ceremony.

KAYLIN BLACKWELL: Look, Harry Potter’s kid! In my year!

KENDALL BETCHER: Looks just like his dad and brother, don’t he?

MCGONAGALL claps her hands to silence the noise.

PROFESSOR MCGONAGALL: Now, children, when I call your name, you will come forth, I shall place the Sorting Hat on your head, and you will be sorted into your houses. Kaylin Blackwell!

  SORTING HAT: HUFFLEPUFF!

The Hufflepuff students clap wildly. FRANK LONGBOTTOM greets her.

FRANK LONGBOTTOM, "Welcome to Hufflepuff, Kaylin!".

  PROFESSOR MCGONAGALL, "Rose Weasley!".

SORTING HAT: Another Weasley, eh? GRYFFINDOR!

  ROSE WEASLEY: YES!

  PROFESSOR MCGONAGALL: Scorpius Malfoy!

He looks ill. The Sorting Hat is barely on his head for a moment before:

  SORTING HAT: SLYTHERIN!

SCORPIUS was expecting this, so was everyone else.

  PROFESSOR MCGONAGALL: Albus Potter!

SORTING HAT: Where to place the Potter boy... I see... Yes... Well, there’s only one option isn’t there. SLYTHERIN!

ALBUS is shell shocked. The students murmur.

JAMES POTTER: Wait till my father hears about this...

STELLA TOWIE: Brother a slimey snake, James?

  JAMES POTTER: Oi, shut it.

  PROFESSOR MCGONAGALL: Kendall Betcher!

And then at the dueling club at HOGWARTS.

NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM: Welcome to dueling club, or as I prefer, Dumbledore’s Army. I’m Professor Longbottom. Today: The disarming spell! Speak with clarity, speak with certainty. Repeat after me: ’Expelliarmus!’

A cacophony of sound as the students all call the spell.

NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM: Frank - son - wand at the ready. Watching! (FRANK moves to the front) Expelliarmus! (FRANK’s wand goes flying) Now then, let’s partner up and practice, shall we?

ALBUS POTTER: Hey, do you have a partner?

STELLA TOWIE: Yeah, it’s anyone but you.

SCORPIUS MALFOY: (Apologetic) Come on, Albus. Ignore them.

NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM: Wands at the ready, wands at the ready. Mr. Potter and Mr. Malfoy, let’s see how we’ve progressed. If you would, Mr. Potter, you first.

  ALBUS POTTER: Expelliarmus!

There is a crack, and his spell misfires, sending his own wand flying out of his hand. Laughter ripples.

JULIANNE RYCROFT: Albus Potter, the Slytherin Squib.

KENDALL BETCHER: Leave him and the Death Eater’s geek to it, I say.

KAYLIN BLACKWELL: Not much like his father after all, is he?

NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM: Nothing to be ashamed of, I was terrible until your father helped me, Mr. Potter. (ALBUS hates the comparison) Right, good enough for today, I believe. If you would, return to your dorms and grab your luggage, the Hogwarts Express will be leaving shortly. Enjoy your winter holiday.

The other students exit, though two make a cross to hand Albus a case and scarf. SCORPIUS retrieves ALBUS’s wand.

SCORPIUS MALFOY: Mate, you dropped this.

ALBUS POTTER: Not like it does me much good. Where’s your case?

SCORPIUS MALFOY: Um, I’m actually not going home for Christmas holiday. Dad said he had too much work.

ALBUS POTTER: I wish I had the option. (Beat) Happy Christmas, Scorpius. And, happy birthday.

  SCORPIUS MALFOY: Happy Christmas.

ALBUS exits. SUDDENLY, the scene shifts are we are in HERMIONE’s living room, with the golden trio.

HERMIONE WEASLEY: Four more missing wizards in the past three months.

RON WEASLEY (Beat, darkly) When did this happen? Why didn’t you tell me any of this?

HERMIONE WEASLEY: I needed to be absolutely certain of the facts before I told either one of you.

RON WEASLEY: D’you think its the same buggers that tortured and killed Sybill Trelawney last year?

HERMIONE WEASLEY: I don’t know. Speculation helps nothing. The fact of the matter is that whoever this is, whatever they’re doing, they’re escalating.

  HARRY POTTER: But to what?

We are back on the platform, with SCORPIUS, ROSE, and ALBUS. Others are milling about. ALBUS looks absolutely miserable.

ROSE WEASLEY: Can you believe it. Third year! Hogsmeade! I heard they even let squibs go.

ALBUS POTTER: Didn’t you hear, Rosie? That’s not what they're calling me anymore.

SCORPIUS MALFOY: (Scoffs) It’s, "The Cursed Child" now.

ROSE WEASLEY: That’s... not the most terrible name I’ve ever heard.

SCORPIUS MALFOY: You’d think after all these years they’d be more creative.

  ALBUS POTTER: Right.

SCORPIUS MALFOY: Feels like just yesterday you were asking me to leave the train car.

ROSE WEASLEY: Watch it, I still might.

  SCORPIUS MALFOY: Who hurt you?

  ALBUS cannot handle the banter.

ALBUS POTTER: My family’s over there. I’ll see you lot on the train.

SCORPIUS MALFOY: Albus, mate, you alright...?

ALBUS POTTER: Do you ever just feel like you’re not meant to fit in?

  SCORPIUS MALFOY: Every day.

ALBUS moves towards the rest of his family while ROSE and SCORPIUS exit. JAMES is on the opposite side of the stage snogging STELLA.

HARRY POTTER: Our Lily is going into her first year! All of you at school.

ALBUS POTTER: Can you, can you not stand so close?

LILY POTTER: Mum! Look at James!

GINNY POTTER: (Calling out) James Sirius Potter, a bit of discretion please. You are so very much like your uncle.

  RON WEASLEY: Wotchit.

JAMES POTTER: Sorry about that, mum. Just showing Stella some Potter hospitality. (Unaffected) We can’t all be brooding Slytherins, isn’t that right, Al? Come on, Lily, first ye
ar awaits! Lily takes off running after her brother. ALBUS moves to follow them.

HARRY POTTER: Albus, don’t forget this! I found your Hogsmeade permission slip in the bin.

ALBUS POTTER: Thanks for that, but I’m not going.

HARRY POTTER: You’re not...? Is this about the other students? Maybe if you tried making friends... I wouldn’t have survived without Ron and Hermione.

ALBUS POTTER: I’ve got friends. I’ve got Rose, most of the time, and I’ve got Scorpius. I know you don’t care for him, but he’s the best friend I’ve got.

GINNY POTTER: My love, you’re misunderstanding what he-

ALBUS POTTER: I get it, mum, okay? It doesn’t matter.

Several people are pointing at HARRY. One approaches him, he reluctantly signs an autograph.

ALBUS POTTER: Best not to keep your fans waiting. (Beat) Got to go. Friends to find.

He crumples the Hogsmeade slip and tosses it to the ground. SCORPIUS and ALBUS move center, crossing as if going to class. LILY and ROSE approach.

SCORPIUS MALFOY: Lily and Rose! Looking lovelier than, well, Lillies and Roses.

LILY POTTER: Right, anyway. Albus, I’m trying out for Quidditch and-

  ALBUS POTTER: And what?

LILY POTTER: I... well, I was wondering if you might cheer me on.

SCORPIUS MALFOY: We’d love to go... (Noticing ALBUS’s face) of course we are very busy. School work. Tests. Quills. Things.

  ALBUS POTTER:: Ask James.

  LILY POTTER: I’m asking you.

ALBUS POTTER: Well I’m saying no.

  SCORPIUS MALFOY: I’m not.

LILY POTTER: I know that you hate it here, but I’m your sister.

ALBUS POTTER: How unfortunate for you.

LILY POTTER: (She is extremely hurt) Why can’t you be pleasant, for even a moment!

  LILY storms offstage.

ROSE WEASLEY: You can be really nasty when you set your mind to it, you know that? You don’t have to be an arse.

SCORPIUS MALFOY: Rose! You, ah, smell. (Beat, realizing his mistake) Nice. You smell nice, I, I meant it to be good.

  ROSE WEASLEY: What?

SCORPIUS MALFOY: Squash. (Beat) You... smell like squash.

ROSE WEASLEY: Albus, I’m only trying to be your friend

ALBUS POTTER: Who’s told you to look after me?

ROSE WEASLEY: No one, I just

SCORPIUS MALFOY: Do we not like squash?

ALBUS POTTER: Just leave me alone, Rose.

  ROSE exits. SCORPIUS sits.
